The politics of the back of a flyer

Here is my proposed back of flyer:

I'm sort of surprised it's turned up like this...? I mean... once you start to size things, decide what to call them, inevitably there is some information you have to leave off for space reasons... and choose their position... you are essentially making political decisions. Doesn't this flyer go against the democratic 'forum' principles with which we are making the show? (Plus there's something extremely vain about putting your name in huge letters.)

The counter-argument is that this is a format that 'the public' will understand. The public understand what a 'director' is, they don't necessarily understand what Atenian Democracy or Metatheatre are (unless they have been reading this blog), or even what the word 'devised' means, for example.

I guess it comes down to power. Or perhaps, for us, exposure. (What does it say about me that I would put my name in such big letters on the back of a flyer????)

Any thoughts about how to change it to a more democratic marketing tool are welcomed.

  1. yeah so on one hand:
i'm not sure about the co-devised billing so much. i think i liked being billed as we are on the side of this page- as performers or as "...'with'... s"
on the other hand i see what you mean about making space though and agree that a flyer is not a program and all.
in fact in that spirit i also reckon unless your name (richard) (or twiggy) is going to pull a crowd in brisbane it's an absolute space eater having it as a thing at all. that said i see what you mean that essentially you could write DIRECTOR: PAUL PAULSON or DIRECTOR: SONJA HORNUNG
and they (the GP) would lap it up with the same earnest enthusiasm if what they really want is a big reassuring Director sign and that's what flicks their switch. i doubt they require this.

i think you'd better use this sort of space by using our TWITCH TWITCH company thing and words even though we only exist in the name of this show i think it's best. that way we are better served as a whole. anyone who comes see the show will then get a program or sheet of who the hell we are individually but i think if the idea is to present a uniform devised group then blow names off and use the company instead.
unless anyone has a sick ass quote we are able to exploit? in the name of art?
also i'm unsure about the font i'd rather we make our own i really like sonjas one she made otherwise i'd say helvetica is best leave it simple so as the show speaks itself and we are not rendered slaves to the ideas of a certain weird font.
i also think the quote is a bit weird. i'd rather another but am unsure what as yet. it may work if the others like it i suppose.

hhmm on second thought you may still want to put rickos and twiggys' names on the thing it's good for their names to be floating around town i suppose but i'd add them as an afterthough after having made twitch twitch company the focusy headline. anyone you really want to know you made it will know when you let them i think.
    ok word out.

lol yikes i've ended up more fascist than democratic in my outlook i think.

  2. Good comments Toby - it's a confusing thing, don't you think?

I suppose the best thing to do is try to do it as quickly as possible and spend our energy making the show? At the end of the day.

  3. I dunno, Twitch twitch doesn't really mean anything at the moment. I'd rather have our names up there, even if it's just something to point to.

Having a writer and a director is also a point of differentiation for us maybe? Saying it's just by Twitch twitch is probably misrepresenting too far the other way, into performance piece realm, not theatre?

  4. i think (in brisbane) our names will make no difference and will probably only matter if anyone has heard of us.. eg only really effect a few odds and ends who are already at the festival who we know anyway; and as subliminal marketting so anyone there will get a little bit of advertising of our names. as far as the show goes; if we want to present this sort of Forced Ent. style show then i still think even though Twitch Twitch is a bit of a non-entity it's basically as much a non-entity as you are or i am and so we me as well use it. that make sense?
